Overview
Revenue NSW collects your personal information for the purpose of administering the Unclaimed Money Act 1995.
Revenue NSW gives priority to protecting the privacy of your personal information. We do this by handling personal information in a responsible manner and in accordance with the NSW Privacy Laws: Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998, Health Records and Information Privacy Act 2002, Unclaimed Money Act 1995 and Taxation Administration Act 1996.
Why are we collecting your personal information?
Revenue NSW is collecting your personal information for the following purposes:
- administering unclaimed money in accordance with the Unclaimed Money Act 1995 and Taxation Administration Act 1996;
- providing you with access to notifications about unclaimed money;
- validating your proof of identity and your personal details for access to your unclaimed money online account;
- contacting you to request, verify, or confirm the information you provide in support of lodgement of unclaimed money;
- responding to complaints and enquiries in relation to unclaimed money, including disclosure to relevant authorities such as the NSW Ombudsman, the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal, etc;
- conducting audit and compliance activities to confirm that legislation has been complied with; and
- other directly related purposes.
What personal information do we collect?
Revenue NSW will collect the following information for the purposes of providing you unclaimed money services:
- your name, email address, contact details and position held;
- your organisation name, ABN/ACN/ARBN, address and bank details
- unclaimed money owner details including:
- owner name
- date of birth for owners who are an individual
- ABN/ACN/ARBN for owners who are a company/organisation
- last known address
- email address
- contact number
How will we use and disclose the information?
Revenue NSW may use your personal information, and the personal information of any unclaimed money owners to:
- verify the information you provide Revenue NSW using the Document Verification Service or any other public/private entity
- collect, maintain and use information about you for unclaimed money administration purposes.
Revenue NSW may disclose the information to:
- public/private entities (including the Document Verification Service) in order to verify the information you provide or request additional information as permitted by law;
- NSW Police, if Revenue NSW reasonably suspects a case of fraud or other criminal activity or as permitted by law;
- Service NSW to provide frontline unclaimed money support services;
- Australian Taxation Office;
- other third party service providers engaged by Revenue NSW to support the administration of unclaimed money;
- authorised representatives, and anyone with implied authority such as joint owners for unclaimed money administration purposes; and
- administer other taxation laws and Revenue NSW legislation such as Fines Act 1996, State Debt Recovery Act 2019 etc.
Revenue NSW may disclose de-identified information:
- to NSW Treasury for the purposes of data analysis and aggregation to audit, analyse and report on unclaimed money. Any report or publications on unclaimed money will not identify any individual; and
- for research and statistical purposes in accordance with the Data Sharing (Government Sector) Act 2015.
Revenue NSW will not disclose the personal information you provide to third parties for any purposes not already stated in this privacy collection notice, or to which you have not otherwise consented, unless Revenue NSW is required, or authorised, by law to do so. We will retain your information in accordance with the law.
Are you required to provide us with this information?
Revenue NSW will only collect personal information that is necessary to deal with your unclaimed money you have lodged. Providing us with the requested information is required under the Unclaimed Money Act 1995.
We will keep your information secure
Revenue NSW will take reasonable security measures to protect your personal information from loss, unauthorised access, use, modification, disclosure, or other misuse. Your personal information will be held and disposed of securely.
