  1. Payment plans for overdue fines

Financial hardship

If you can’t afford to pay in full by the due date you may be able to pay by instalments if you

  • receive a government benefit
  • can pay the full amount within three months
  • need longer than three months to pay
  • are already paying off other fines.

You must contact us before the payment reminder due date to set up a payment plan.

If you don't make the first payment or set up a payment plan by the penalty reminder due date

  • you will have to pay an additional $65 fee and
  • we may start recovery action against you.
  • We also offer other options if you are experiencing serious financial, medical or other personal problems. Find out more about:

    • what to do if you are having difficulty with payment
    • how to ask someone to talk to us about your situation
    • whether you might be eligible for a work and development order (WDO).

    Pay off your debt

We offer options to pay your debt in instalments depending on your situation.

If you receive a government benefit

You may be able to pay in fortnightly instalments, deducted automatically from your Centrelink payments through Centrepay.

If you have an existing payment plan:

    • go to myEnforcement order and update your plan.

To set up a payment plan:

Read more in our hardship policy.

If you can pay the full amount within three months

You will first need to pay $40 or one-sixth of your fine, whichever is greater, before the penalty reminder due date.

    • When we receive your first payment, we’ll set up fortnightly payments.
    • We will then send a copy of the plan which tells you how much to pay and when to pay.
    • Under this plan, you must pay up to five more instalments of at least $40 until you clear your debt.
    • If you miss one of these payments you must immediately pay your fine in full, as well as a $65 late fee.
    • To make sure you don’t miss a payment, we suggest you set up a direct debit by calling 1300 492 392. You can pay directly from your bank account or by Visa or Mastercard.
    • Read the terms and conditions of our direct debit service.

If you need longer than three months to pay

You should still try to make a payment of $40 or one-sixth of your fee before the penalty reminder due date. If you don’t, you’ll receive an enforcement order and will be charged a $65 enforcement fee.

If you have received an enforcement order, you can then set up an instalment plan to pay over a longer period.

If you have an existing payment plan:

    • go to myEnforcement order and update your plan.

To set up a payment plan:

If you can’t afford to pay because you’re already paying off other fines, you may be able to have your overdue fine added to your balance.
